The urologist who has attained Certification by the American Board of Urology (ABU) has specialized knowledge and skill with regard to problems of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Although urology is classified as a surgical subspecialty, a knowledge of internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, and other specialties is required by the urologist because of the wide variety of clinical problems encountered.
What is Board Certification?
The American Board of Urology (ABU) was organized in 1935. The objective of the ABU is to identify for the patient and public those physicians who have satisfied the Board's criteria for certification and recertification in the specialty of urology.
To be certified by the ABU the urologist must have met a standard in urology by fulfilling specified educational and examination requirements, and have engaged in a minimum of 18 months of urological practice.
